Officials

Where would we be without the men and women who weigh, measure, time and record all our activities? We aim to help our officials progress onwards and upwards through their chosen specialism, helping them to expand their knowledge and become ever more accomplished in their skills and knowledge.

Apart from National and SEAA championships, there are of many other events where your help would be appreciated.  You may be able to officiate at your local club, school district, League or County.  The British Athletics League and the UK Women's Athletics League are always seeking officials to help at their fixtures.  These types of meeting provide especially good experience opportunities for Level 1, 2 and 3 officials.  Download the forms from the England Athletics website.  Your annual Duty Sheet / Form 10 / Record of Experience is also in the officials section.

You can find out about the latest Level 1 and 2 courses in the south by going to the England Athletics website Events section

The SEAOA provide services to officials in the south, and there's lots of general information on the England Athletics website in both the Officials section and in the Your Area section.

Take a look at the national online discussion forum (you need to create a log in but your email won't be shared with anyone).

DON TURNER

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of SEAA board member and Hon Treasurer Don Turner.

William Donald Turner was born in Epsom on 14th February 1937.

Don, as many NUTS (National Union of Track Statisticians) will know, was an international ultra-runner in his youth, running for Epsom & Ewell Harriers. Don ran 65 marathons in his career was placed four times in the London to Brighton race in 1959 (2nd), 1961 (3rd), 1962 (2nd) and 1963 (3rd). He was 3rd in the gruelling 1962 Comrades Marathon, held in South Africa, running the uphill course in 6 hours 7 minutes and 8 seconds.

Don set a world track running record at Stompond Lane, Walton on 22nd October 1960, running 52 miles and 1110 yards in the allotted 6 hours.

Don, a former civil servant, worked tirelessly as a volunteer and official for Epsom & Ewell, Surrey County Athletic Association, South of England Athletics Association and others, and he played a key role in organising the finish and the timekeeping at the first London Marathon held on 29th March 1981.

Don won an award for Services to Athletics and Running at the England Athletics South East Awards in November 2023. You can read more about this here: https://www.englandathletics.org/news/south-east-volunteer-awards-evening/
